Birdly Units Take Flight at the Field Museum

Evanston, IL (November 21, 2019) – D3D Cinema and SOMNIACS are pleased to announce the latest addition to the fast-growing North American Birdly network: The Field Museum in Chicago, IL. The Field will launch two units before Thanksgiving – one dedicated to Jurassic Flight in the Evolving Planet dinosaur gallery and the second dedicated to an original Chicago flyover experience, configured to strategically move within the museum.

“We’ve had our eye on Birdly for quite awhile and the ability to now offer both dinosaurs and our own signature city experience meant the time was right,” said Megan Williams, Director of Business Enterprises at The Field Museum. “Two units will optimize visibility and capture as well as maximize our ability to package Birdly with events and traveling exhibitions. We’ve seen how well Birdly can generate revenue and buzz and we’re excited to bring the experience to Chicago.”

The Field Museum joins an expanding group of leading museums and science centers across North America and the world, including the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Cincinnati Museum Center, The Tech Interactive in San Jose, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the TELUS World of Science in Vancouver, and dozens more. Birdly is an immersive storytelling vehicle; the bio-mechanical simulation of flight allows for avatars of all stripes – birds, butterflies, pterosaurs, manta rays, bats, dragons, aliens – taking flyers to environments throughout the natural world, the solar system, history, fictional universes and, of course, to photorealistic cities produced custom for the platform, such as Chicago.

“It’s exciting to see these prestigious institutions – like the Field Museum – generating growth in the Birdly network, enabling the development of more mission-focused and signature city content,” said Mark Katz, SVP at D3D Cinema. “Museums are experiencing the crowd-generating, Instagram-friendly, profitability this type of mission-focused, premium VR can offer. It’s an exciting time for Birdly…with some more big announcements around the corner.”
